This is it, the last Smackdown before the biggest wrestling event of the summer, SummerSlam.
Since we're unlikely to see much plot pushed this week, here's a quick summary of existing rivalries going into SummerSlam. At the top of the card, Daniel Bryan will be facing Jon Cena for the WWE Championship. Bryan's been sidetracked somewhat by Wade Barrett, who unsuccessfully attempted to shave his beard earlier in the month. The two will meet for a third time tonight, presumably putting an end to their feud. Alberto Del Rio will be facing Christian for the Heavyweight Championship. Kane will take Bray Wyatt in a ring of fire. Natalya will meet Brie Bella in a rivalry carried over from Total Divas. Dolph Ziggler and Kaitlyn will take on former Ziggler buddies AJ Lee and Big E. Langston in a mixed-gender tag match. Damien Sandow will try settle the score with former tag partner Cody Rhodes. Dean Ambrose will defend his US Championship against veteran challenger Rob Van Dam. And CM Punk will settle a grudge with Brock Lesnar and Paul Heyman.
What's happening this week on WWE Smackdown? Here's the preview from the WWE:
After Rob Van Dam outlasted Mark Henry in a grueling 20-Man Battle Royal on Raw to become United States Champion Dean Ambrose's SummerSlam Kickoff No. 1 contender, The Shield emerged to interrupt a show of respect between RVD and The World's Strongest Man. The unexpected return of Big Show, however, evened the odds and halted the "Hounds of Justice" in their tracks.
Tonight on SmackDown, the black-clad trio will get a chance to right that "injustice" in a Six-Man Tag Team Match, which also marks The World's Largest Athlete's in-ring return to action. Will the all-star squad of RVD, Henry and Big Show be a big enough threat to beat The Shield? Or, is there a series of Triple Powerbombs in their immediate future?
